History/Overview
General Motors’ truck-only brand rolled out its fourth-generation heavy-duty pickups in 2020, including the Sierra 3500HD you’re reading about here. A similar Sierra 2500HD that differs only in trailer and payload capacities is covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry; the same goes for Chevrolet’s Silverado 2500/3500 HD models, which are distinguished mostly through styling details.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
There are no changes to the GMC Sierra 3500 HD this year, save for the base trim being renamed Pro.
Available Trims
Sierra 3500HD trims include Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali. Depending on the trim in question, you can get a regular, double or crew cab body, and choose between short and long box sizes.
Then, either stick with the standard gas V8 and six-speed transmission, or upgrade to a turbodiesel V8 and a 10-speed. Rear- and four-wheel drive are offered, along with single or dual rear wheels.
Standard Features
Sierra 3500HD Pro comes with a locking diff, 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, and a tailgate lock. Inside, there’s a two-speaker stereo, vinyl front seats, Bluetooth, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, and hitch guidance.
SLE adds alloy wheels, a multi-function tailgate, six-speaker stereo, carpeted floors, cruise control, leather steering wheel, power door locks/ windows, cloth upholstery, and a rear seat reminder.
SLT’s additions include a trailer brake controller, LED cargo lighting, chrome exterior trim, LED fog lights, power-folding/auto-dimming side mirrors, trailering aids, passive keyless entry, remote engine start. Inside, SLT gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen, heated/power seats, dual-zone A/C, heated steering wheel, auto-dimming mirror, tilt-and-telescopic steering, rear window defogger, leather, and wireless smartphone integration.
AT4’s adds are hill descent control, all-terrain tires, off-road suspension, skid plates, gloss black trim, heated rear seats, and ventilated front seats.
Finally, Denali trim brings 20-inch wheels, lane change assist, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic assist, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, forward collision mitigation, automatic high beams, a power-sliding rear window, navigation, digital gauge display, bed and surround-view cameras, a garage door remote, and wireless phone charging.
Key Options
The Kodiak package adds remote start, heated steering wheel, passive keyless, dual-zone A/C, power/heated seats, LED fog lights, and roof marker lights.
An SLT convenience group brings heated/ventilated bucket seats with a console, power sliding rear window, garage door remote, and LED roof marker lights.
An SLE preferred package adds a garage remote, power rear window, 120-volt outlets, 8.0-inch touchscreen, and trailering assists. The SLT preferred package adds navigation, wireless smartphone charging, and a bed view camera.
There are also Driver Alert I and II packages that add varying levels of driver safety assist content.
The tech package gets a rear camera mirror, a head-up display, and a part-digital gauge cluster.
Denali buyers can add an ultimate package (sunroof, rear camera mirror, head-up display, bed view camera); or a black diamond edition package (power-retractable side steps, trailer tire pressure monitor, LED perimeter lighting, and the items in the ultimate package).
Fuel economy
Natural Resources Canada classifies the Sierra 3500 as a commercial vehicle and doesn’t require fuel consumption estimates.
Competition
GMC’s competitors include the similar Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD, the Ram 3500, and the Ford F-350.
